Goodreads asked Gayle Rosengren:

How do you get inspired to write?

Gayle Rosengren I think people become writers because they love reading, and I'm no exception. The fact that I write for children, though, rather than for adults, is because books were so important to me as a girl. We were quite poor and I didn't get to go many places or do many unusually fun things, but books were doorways to other worlds, other lives. While I was reading I was living in different times and places and having adventures vicariously. It made such a difference in my life and to the person I was to become that from the time I was ten I knew I wanted not just to be a writer, but to write for this age group. While I'm at it, I should say that because we had little money I had a very few books of my own. Libraries--both school and public--made all the difference to this book-lover/wannabe writer.
