The Fear of Man is a Snare

A believer can fail to mature in their walk with God because of an inability to say no to people and draw boundaries. When people benefit from your lack of boundaries, you inevitably get drained and you feel used. But when you finally muster up courage and draw the requisite boundaries, some of these people who were benefitting from your yes-man syndrome may accuse you of being selfish. This may stir you, instill fear in you and cause you to want to let them have their way.If you do that, noth...

7 things parents should do to stop destroying their children’s future marriages

This year, we will clock the 1,000 mark as far as taking couples through premarital counselling is concerned. We are currently at 970. That is 1940 individuals. We have done this over four years via twelve seasons of premarital classes. When you interact with nearly 1,000 couples who are about to enter the marriage institution, you learn a few things. You hear encouraging stories and you hear devastating ones. You see break-ups that are breakthroughs and make-ups that are mess ups. You see good...

Forgive as you have been forgiven

A few thoughts from my quiet time today morning. I am studying the sermon on the mount in the book of Matthew by our Lord Jesus. When he gets to the Lord’s prayer He teaches this:

“Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”

Jesus ties the request for God’s forgiveness to our extension of forgiveness to others. One cannot function without the other. The two are almost symbiotic. According to the LORD, it is absurd to expect forgiveness from God while you withhold it from others. It’...

BOOKS I HAVE READ IN 2024

I usually make it my personal ambition to read at least one book a month. This year I have done terribly. I have only read 7 books. I have friends whose goal is to read one book a week! 😱 Make sure you have friends who are better than you! A friend of mine called Catherine was on book number 62 two weeks ago! And those are physical pages, not audiobooks. I once heard that Barack Obama does an average of 52 books a year. And George Bush does 75. But don’t let them stress you. These double digiter...

DOES GOD HAVE FAVOURITES?

It is often said that God has no favourites. It is indeed a statement that even scripture backs up:

Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭11‬ “For God does not show favoritism.” (NIV‬‬)

Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭45‬ ‭”…Your Father in heaven

…causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (NIV‬‬)

However, there are times it can feel that He does have favourites, especially you read certain portions of scripture. It seems as if God gives Abraham a pass even when he...

12 things I have learned from 12 years of marriage

On the 1st of September 2012, Waturi and I exchanged our vows on the lawns of Brackenhurst Limuru. How a dozen years have passed by befuddles me! The journey has peaked north and sunk south. The net effect has been a grateful journey that I would not wish to take with anyone else but Waturi. In the good and the tough, the faithfulness of God has sustained us on account of our faith in Christ Jesus through believing the Gospel. I could speak elaborately on the themes of being a husband. However,...
