Why, because Portia experiences profound emotional after-effects of her decision? How could she not? You don't just walk away from an experience like that. But "anti-adoption" is an extraordinary interpretation, I think. I've been asked if I'm anti-choice BECAUSE a character gives up a newborn for adoption. I thought that was pretty bizarre, too. (When a Catholic magazine "lauded" ADMISSION for being "Pro-Life" because the protagonist chooses not to have an abortion, I did what you never do: responded to a review, because I was that furious about it.) For the record: I am ardently pro-choice (which means, at least to me, also pro-adoption). Besides, who on earth could "personally disagree with adoption"? Are there actually people who do? (less)

THE SEQUEL is now out!

I hope everyone enjoys it! One thing you get asked when you write a sequel is: can you read it without heaving read the first novel (in this case, THE PLOT)? The answer is, well, sure, but why would you want to? Read THE PLOT first and be ready for maximum fun and games (some of them murderous) in THE SEQUEL.

A gentle reminder NOT to ask me to be a Goodreads friend, or follow my reviews. I probably Read more of this blog post »

“Good writers borrow, great writers steal. —T. S. Eliot (but possibly stolen from Oscar Wilde)”
Jean Hanff Korelitz, The Plot

“There is a sound to waiting. It sounds like held breath pounding its fists against the walls of the lung, damp and muffled beats.”
Jean Hanff Korelitz, Admission

“Once you were in possession of an actual idea, you owed it a debt for having chosen you, and not some other writer, and you paid that debt by getting down to work, not just as a journeyman fabricator of sentences but as an unshrinking artist ready to make painful, time-consuming, even self-flagellating mistakes.”
Jean Hanff Korelitz, The Plot
