Fork In The Road

The road of life is sometimes confusing, isn't it? We are frequently faced with forks in the road, when we must choose one direction over the other. Most times, the right road will be clear to us, we'll make our choice and proceed.

Sometimes, though, the right road is unclear. Both roads look equally correct. Both hold benefits for us that outweigh the risks. Or both roads seem equally dangerous. Standing in the middle is not an option; we must make a choice.

How do you decide your path at such a time? What criteria helps you discern what path seems right?

At some point in life you will realize it is less important which path you choose, and more important that you step out in either direction. If you make a wrong choice, return to the middle and start over. Action is what matters. You cannot get where you want in life without taking those first brave steps.

The next time you face a fork in the road, look left, look right, and then step out!

Out of Season

This winter I passed through a lovely garden. Between the carefully laid out paths, the benches placed at select intervals, the trellises and statuary gracing various points along the paths, I could feel the great care this garden received, could imagine the glorious specimens that would bloom in spring and summer, and the birds that would fill the space with color and song.

In winter, though, the garden looked lost and lonely, empty of purpose, void of life. Snow covered statues seemed out of place. The garden bench ached for company. The sundial yearned for the sun’s warm rays to shine down and cast time-telling shadows.

Our lives, at times, seem like a winter garden. The season that gives purpose and color to our lives seems far off. Realization of our dreams is on hold. The roads we had hoped to follow are buried under mounds of snow; blizzard-like white outs blind our way. Even our hearts seem frozen.

Winter never lasts forever, although this one to many of us seems like it might! The snow will melt, the sun will shine stronger and longer, ground will thaw, and flowers will bloom once again. The season for your dreams and plans will reopen. For now, hold fast, don’t lose faith, and continue to chart your course, no matter how covered the roads seem to be.
