The Fortuitous Pen

I consider myself to be an accidental author. That’s right, becoming a published author happened, by chance.

For years, I’ve worked in the corporate world. Essentially, I’m a problem solver for corporations and government. So, you can imagine how much of a shift it was for me to sit down and write.

During the summer of 2013, I put pen to paper. I let my sexy imagination loose and before I knew it I’d filled a more than a few pages. The characters came to life and the story began to take shape.

I’m blessed with incredible friends who were willing to read as I wrote. They offered insight and suggestions, but most importantly they offered unconditional support and encouragement to keep writing.

And so began, the greatest chapter of my life.

My first manuscript took just over a month to write. With just over 64,000 words, I’d taken the main characters, Kate Callahan and Bradley Taylor on a journey. I had my friends read Passion, Power, and Privilege and then made several edits in response to their suggestions. In October of 2013, I sent my little baby off to a select group of publishers. And waited.

I was hooked. While I waited, I started writing another novel. An entirely new set of characters, a new setting, and a new plot began to take shape. By the end of October, I’d put the finishing touches on Going the Distance, the story of Austin Campbell and Brett Tanner.

Writing has been cathartic. Becoming published has been exhilarating.

This journey isn’t over. I continue to write, as time permits. A third manuscript is in the works.

Who Knows Where Inspiration Comes From

I distinctly remember the moment I was inspired to start writing. I was on a search for some summer reading material and began flipping through a number of books at my local library. With two young children and a full-time career, I hadn’t indulged in a good novel in some time, and I was anxious to find a story that would whisk me away on a romantic adventure. I scanned the book covers of some of my favorite authors before opening a novel by a relatively new author that I hadn’t yet encountered. As I skimmed the pages, it occurred to me, that in my hiatus from reading, I’d conjured up characters and stories in my head. I quietly wondered to myself, if the narratives in my mind were interesting and compelling to anyone other than me. Would they be worthy of a novel? I questioned if anyone would possibly find my imaginary friends interesting, compelling, engaging, and inspiring.

I made the spontaneous decision to sit down and type out a scene that had repeatedly played out in my head. I’d blocked out the world and poured out my thoughts, in an experience that can only be described as ‘lost in the moment’. I had a raw but coherent chapter of 3,500 words. The experience of writing was intoxicating, exhilarating, and cathartic. I was hooked.

Each day, I wrote. The manuscript gradually came to life. As I added in more and more detail, I found inspiration from so many places. A conversation with a friend would invoke an emotion. The words of a song would tweak an idea for dialogue between characters. The scent of a man’s cologne as I walked through the office would find it’s way into the
I found that as I wrote, my senses came alive and I became hyper sensitive to the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and tactile moments of my everyday life. The personality traits of my friends and acquaintances were woven into the fabric of my fictional characters and they became real identities that I couldn’t stop writing about.

Book Review: Passion, Power and Privilege

Kate’s marriage with Dwanye was frar from ideal, but when she finds herself suddenly single again, she has no idea what to do. Picking up the pieces of a previous life, she wonders whether she should return to her job as a corporate lawyer, or take a risk, and proceed with her campaign to become the Mayor of her city. What she didn’t think would happen, was that she’d fall in love agian.

But then she meets Brad, and he’s everything she’s wanted in a partner. He’s handsome, successful, and inspires her to follow her dreams. He brings out a passion and love Kate thought had long disappeared. But unfortunately the past has a way of catching up with both of them, and if they want a chance at happiness, they’ll have to overcome secrets of the past to find love.

I loved Kate. She wasn’t scared to take on any challenge. She was brave, thoughtful, and intelligent. But when she met Brad, something awoke inside of her that was more than all that. It brought forth a better Kate, a Kate who could change the world, if she wanted to. Brad is the kind of guy you can only dream of in real life. A perfect gentleman, charming, a tad bit possessive, and very, very loving.

The plot was all right, and the more sexy scenes were definitely sexy. But there was tons of romance as well, and the characters really match in all aspects of life (with that, I mean not just the bedroom). My first book by this author, but if she writes any more, I’d love to read them.
