A Memorable Bath

I very rarely have a bath. I prefer a shower, standing like a horse in the mild racket of the rain. The dust and grit washing down the drain.
Years ago, when I was younger and more susceptible to chance suggestions, I had a bath I remember. I had been divorced for half a year or so, and was living with a girlfriend. Strange. she was already uncomfortable having me around, like a weird telescoping of what had taken years to develop in my marriage.
One evening around Christmas (my girlfriend was back east for the holidays) I had a horrible respiratory congestion. I decided to take a bath and then I had the happy thought of singing a song. It was to have been a cheerful melody with uplifting lyrics. But with my ravaged throat it came out as a wail and a lamentation. Then a funny thing happened. I realized that this wailing, so accidentally arrived at, was exactly how I felt. So I let myself wail in earnest.
Sometimes the body will stumble accidentally in some direction and we realize that we have taken a step along a path that may lead us somewhere new.
