Now I'm older (yes!) and wiser (…maybe), I have a couple of favourite couples. The pair in Katherine Mansfield's short story 'Something Strange, But Very Natural' for their purity and beauty; and George Simeon's Maigrets. Mrs Maigret is so wonderfully calm and such a wonderful chef in the face of anything. Her quiet nature is much underrated, I feel. I have always thought of her as a Mycroft figure to Maigret's Holmes, one feels she holds all the answers if only her husband would ask! (less)
