As a reader, one must spend time either accruing a personal library or-- and this is riskier-- accessing someone else's. Then, over a period of days or weeks one chews and expels the books, creating a pulpy paste that can be applied to any fixed structure, though many writers will tell you that any space under eaves works well for temperature regulation and predator avoidance. Once your book structure is complete, you move on in, surrounded by the comforting smell of paper and your own warm breath, and there you remain until your insides melt. After a timeless age, your book home cracks and you emerge a wet and glistening writer. That's pretty much the best.(less)

Living writers are oscillating bodies whipped between arrogant confidence and face-rending doubt, which gives off the necessary electrical charge-- this rapid changing of states-- required to fuel the creation of the unnecessary.

Occasionally of the actually-necessary.

But that's for the reader to decide and the reader lives somewhere in the future.

I guess my advice is: You wanna write? Maybe go write. It's as meaningful an activity as anything. Some people go to remote wilderness areas and stack rocks on top of each other. Self-expression takes strange forms. We're not here for very long.

Please stop asking questions. I am a living writer and my opinion has an indeterminate value.(less)

“What’s that thing when someone gets a knock on the head and suddenly can’t remember anything about himself?’
Death,’ said the barman, his face a mask of disapproval.”
Steve Aylett, The Crime Studio

Mark Leyner
“On our last mission - our "final exam" - we were airlifted to a remote region, and we parachuted directly into a hostile enclave. We had to subdue the enemy using hand-to-hand tactics like tae kwon do and pugil sticks, cut their hair in styles appropriate to their particular face shapes, and give them perms.”
Mark Leyner, My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist

“Locals? I hit print on the shock file, and my face was the paper that came out of the printer! Locals! I had no idea this deep into the green inferno there'd be people living! Or dying!”
Mark Gunk, Zikki Zikki Chango

“I think horror is a good genre for exploring anything, because everything is pretty horrifying. And I think the most effective horror things, and even maybe the most ineffective ones, are pretty absurd, and usually pretty funny.”
Pete Toms

Stephen Leacock
“But after all-- I say this as a kind of afterthought in conclusion-- why bother with success at all? I have observed that the successful people get very little real enjoyment out of life. In fact the contrary is true. If I had to choose-- with an eye to having a really pleasant life-- between success and ruin, I should prefer ruin every time. I have several friends who are completely ruined-- some two or three times-- in a large way of course; and I find that if I want to get a really good dinner, where the champagne is just as it ought to be, and where hospitality is unhindered by mean thoughts of expense, I can get it best at the house of a ruined man.”
Stephen Leacock, Frenzied Fiction
