The Gettysburg Address: Why Lincoln's Speech Lives On

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here,  but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us
the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work
which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

                                                                        —Abraham Lincoln

Shelby Foote
“The Civil War defined us as what we are and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things... It was the crossroads of our being, and it was a hell of a crossroads.”
Shelby Foote, The Civil War: A Narrative

Shelby Foote
“A university is just a group of buildings gathered around a library.”
Shelby Foote

Shelby Foote
“The point I would make is that the novelist and the historian are seeking the same thing: the truth – not a different truth: the same truth – only they reach it, or try to reach it, by different routes. Whether the event took place in a world now gone to dust, preserved by documents and evaluated by scholarship, or in the imagination, preserved by memory and distilled by the creative process, they both want to tell us how it was: to re-create it, by their separate methods, and make it live again in the world around them.”
Shelby Foote, The Civil War, Vol. 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville

“Be strong and of good courage. do not fear of be afraid of them ; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. he will not leave you or forsake you." Deut.31:6.”
The Holy Bible, Holy Bible: King James Version

George R.R. Martin
“I admire Tolkien greatly. His books had enormous influence on me. And the trope that he sort of established—the idea of the Dark Lord and his Evil Minions—in the hands of lesser writers over the years and decades has not served the genre well. It has been beaten to death. The battle of good and evil is a great subject for any book and certainly for a fantasy book, but I think ultimately the battle between good and evil is weighed within the individual human heart and not necessarily between an army of people dressed in white and an army of people dressed in black. When I look at the world, I see that most real living breathing human beings are grey.”
George R.R. Martin
