Another Update on the Sequel

I’ve gotten a couple of inquiries—well, more than a couple!—about what sort of progress I’m making with the sequel to The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic. It has been more than a year since I posted here to let you know that I was about three-quarters of the way through a first draft. Time for an update.

I spent most of the past year finishing the first draft of the sequel. As usual, it took longer than expected because characters often insist on having their own way, and magic is complicated. No major spoilers here—but it took me a while to understand exactly how timestones work, for example. The Kavareen turned out to have more interesting depths than I first thought. And Nora’s magical education took some unpredictable detours.

Now I’m at the stage where I’m getting feedback on Book 2 and revising. The first readers of the manuscript appear to have survived their ordeal intact; some even say they enjoyed it. They’ve also given me some really terrific suggestions—which in turn has sparked some new ideas on my part. “Wait, I never knew THAT about Aruendiel!”

You can tell where this is going, right? I wish I had a definite, set-in-stone publication date to give you. But I don’t, and it will be a while before I do. Writing takes time, and then editing takes more time. The first draft of The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic took three years, I spent a year revising it before I even tried to find a publisher, and then it was three more years of editing and rewriting—not to mention all the myriad things that publishers do to create an actual, physical book and get it into bookstores—before the novel saw print.

So. I’m working now, and it’s going well. That does mean that I'm sometimes too busy writing to respond to your wonderful messages and comments. I wish I could get back to everyone who has taken the time to write to me to ask me how the sequel is going, but then—well, you see my dilemma.

Still, I have to be honest. When I sit down to write, I have a couple of habits. First, I make a pot of tea. And then—usually without even thinking about it—I take off my watch. Because where I’m headed, I can’t think too much about time.

Katie Yay! I was wondering about your sequel, so I'm glad to hear it's going well! Good luck - I can't wait, but I am much more happy with a book you are happy with - it makes for a better reading experience. :)

Katie =^..^=

message 5: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Crouch Thank you for the update! Even if there is no publication date it's always good to know that it is still a work in progress. I hope you are having a great year.

message 6: by Cristina (new)

Cristina I was just thinking about TTWGTRM last week and wondering if I missed something. I'm so glad to hear it's in the works! Really appreciate the update and whenever it comes out am looking forward to the sequel! Until then the first book is on my re-read list :)

message 7: by Mandi (new)

Mandi Awesome! Keep up the great work, and remember, you've got plenty of support WHENEVER you finally finish. No pressure or anything haha.

message 8: by Jane (new)

Jane Jenkins My heart is broken that Alan Rickman won't be playing Aruendiel, but I still can't wait for the sequel.

message 9: by Rondalyn (new)

Rondalyn I check weekly for any and all new, news. thank you so much for an update! It calms my mind to know there is a sequal. If you need another proof reader, it would be an honer.

message 10: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Well I guess it will be at least another year. I do so enjoy the first book. If the second book is anything like the first book it will be worth the wait. Should I hold my breathe and hope for a third book?

message 11: by NM (new)

NM Like I say, good things are worth waiting for. Good to hear from you!

message 12: by Kat (new)

Kat I'm glad you can take the time you need to write the next book. Godspeed!

message 13: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Chew Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!

message 14: by Trever (new)

Trever Ashley wrote: "Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!"

Sadly no, not yet. I was just teasing her GRRM-style over her slow progress. :D

message 15: by Jane (new)

Jane Jenkins Ashley wrote: "Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!"

And I had been hoping for a movie series with Alan Rickman as Aruendiel. Where Snape (sort of) gets the girl at last.

Trever Jane wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!"

That's funny, I never pictured Aruendiel as a Rickman type... I guess my mental image is somewhere closer to Anson Mount (see "Hell on Wheels" on Netflix) but he's already booked up to be my ideal Jesse Custer instead of the guy who's playing Jesse in the Preacher TV series, so I dunno...

message 17: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Gary Oldman think make a good Aruendiel. I seen him in several movies. He is pretty good. Of course Alan Rickman would have been better bit that is not to be.

message 18: by Nik Nikolai (new)

Nik Nikolai Thank you so, so much for this update! I personally imagine Adam Driver as Aruendiel and Domhnall Gleeson as Perin... So will the patronymics be explained? And is the weird farmer professor at the beginning of book 1 actually Micher Samle? I have too many questions!!!

message 19: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Lauren I thought that too. Micher Samle was Farmer Dalmer.
Especially when she bumped into him. It seemed to me he recognized her but it was too soon to say anything. Maybe this next book will shed some light.

Susan Jane wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!"

And sadly Alan RIckman is no longer with us so there's that...

Jane Jenkins Susan wrote: "Jane wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Am I missing something? Is there a tv show?!"

An..."

Well, yes, but if you read the rest of the posts, you'll see the reference. The thing that surprised me was how few people seem to have caught the author's intimation of Alan Rickman as Snape. Towards the end of the book, Nora's little little sister calls Aruendiel "Snape!" when she sees him. And all through the book, the description of Aruendiel fits Alan Rickman very well, including the eye color. (Mr. Rickman wore black contacts to play Snape, his eyes were actually pale.) And if there was ever a look I pictured as Aruendiel's face, it was Snape's after he had just been forced to kill Dumbeledore...

message 22: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Well Jane everything you say is true. Sadly Alan rickman will not play Aruendiel. Can you think of another who could do this?

message 23: by Jane (last edited Mar 15, 2016 08:24AM) (new)

Jane Jenkins Lynne wrote: "Well Jane everything you say is true. Sadly Alan rickman will not play Aruendiel. Can you think of another who could do this?"
I can but he's small and not very handsome. But he's the most magnificent actor, so you don't notice. Did you see Mark Rylance in "Wolf Hall"? He has all the restraint and facial subtlety to be Aruendiel, perhaps. Would he be willing? Who knows.
One thing he and Alan Rickman have in common - before starting to play in movies, Mr. Rickman was a very fine British theater actor. Mark Rylance is considered by many to be the finest such of his generation.

message 24: by Trever (new)

Trever I just realized that these posts were by Jane Jenkins. You would not by any chance be the Jane Jenkins who wrote Gabriel Knight, perchance?

message 25: by Jane (new)

Jane Jenkins Trever wrote: "I just realized that these posts were by Jane Jenkins. You would not by any chance be the Jane Jenkins who wrote Gabriel Knight, perchance?"
Lol, no. Nor am I the Jane Jenkins who did the casting for so many popular movies. Just a happy reader.

message 26: by Leah (new)

Leah Please please please release a sequel! Fabulous book interesting plot and left me desperate to know more!!! Best of luck and happy writing! :)

message 27: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Leah I have been waiting for several years but I know Emily's books are quite detailed and have a lot of hidden plots and characters. I loved her first book a lot. I have read it several times already. I can hardy wait too.

message 28: by Katie (new)

Katie Thanks for the update! TTWGTRM is one of my favorite books and I am very excited a sequel is in the works!

message 29: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Mercury Retrograde April 28th - It's the perfect time for revisions! Remember your 'R' words - rewrite, review, revise, reconsider and the granddaddy of them all - redo. :)

message 30: by Robin in Vermont (new)

Robin in Vermont Please, please, please tell me that Alyssa Bresnahan will be narrating the audiobooks for the next two books?!!? I've listened to book 1 over and over, and I just don't know if I would accept another narrator taking over, giving the character's different voices! (BTW: I'm kinda thrilled that you're taking your time with book 2. It's hard to wait, but knowing you're being so careful with it, makes the anticipation even greater!)

message 31: by DeB (new)

DeB I will have to go back and re-read "A Thinking Woman's Guide to Magic" so that I remember everyone and everything in the novel. Thank you for the update. I was worried that the sequel had been abandoned, which would have been a total shame. Now I will patiently wait. ;-D

message 32: by Katharine (new)

Katharine Fitzgerald I just finished the book and I absolutely loved it, Nora is a character I can totally identify with. I cant wait for a sequel!

message 33: by Trever (new)

Trever It takes her extra time to come up with the really creative ways to kill off all the favorite characters...

message 34: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Trevor- is that really an appropriate comment?

message 35: by Trever (last edited Jun 16, 2016 12:35PM) (new)

Trever I was just making a George RR Martin joke :D
(Also, ECB and I have been friends for 20+ years now and I regularly supply her with silly suggestions, like making the ice demon the star of the second book...)

message 36: by Lynne (last edited Jun 16, 2016 01:14PM) (new)

Lynne Macdonald Let apologize to you. I enjoy Emily's book The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic very much. I thought you may have been a troll. I was sort of upset when I saw the comment because Mrs. Torisel died from Ilissa killing her/heart attack and Herzi being swallowed by her pet/prisoner. I just thought who was next but it is her story to tell- she can do away with whoever she wanted to or not. I am just anxiously waiting for her next book. It has been several years. I am sorry. I did not know your prior friendship to her. PS Please tell her to try to wrap up this next installment as best as she can. Thank you. In my mind I am thinking- tell Emily to either give Nora and A a torrid love affair or a firm solid friendship based on love. Oh yes- the butler did it.

message 37: by Trever (new)

Trever No worries! Nah, I'm not a troll... or at least, if I troll her she can bop me on the head directly if she wants to :D She and my wife have been friends since they were wee tiny girls. The new book is in draft form now, being edited and commented on - We've got a copy of it here that my wife is reading through. Publishing moves at the speed of government, though, so there's no telling still how much longer it will be before the draft turns into a shiny book at Barnes & Noble.

Sadly, ECB has resisted all my suggestions to turn Nora into an invincible weaponized cyborg, but I keep trying.

message 38: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Ah but Nora could turn into a powerful magician and ally to/A. Divorce R and bring her sister R over to learn to be a magician.

message 39: by Sonica (new)

Sonica I would love to be a beta reader, if you're looking for any! :D

message 40: by Ann (new)

Ann Monigheanruadh I just finished reading The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic and am so happy to read that you're working on a sequel! <3 I put aside work and some obligations because I had to find out what was going to happen. I love Nora's modern sensibilities in Aruendiel's world, and the character's names and naming conventions. Of course, I hate Raclin and am sure we haven't seen the last of him yet -- she still had the detested unifying ring! Thanks for the update and for all your hard work!

message 41: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Give it more time she is working on it

message 42: by Angie (new)

Angie I just finished the book and immediately googled Sequel? Glad it is in the works. Arundiel is such a wonderful character, deep and complicated. I adore characters who live in the liminal space between living and dead, noble and unethical, logic and heart. I am so looking forward to the next book.

message 43: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald As do I. I can hardy wait... I am getting older too. Emily.. Is it almost ready or would this make wonderful Christmas gift to myself.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Evanko I just finished the book!!! It was very good, I can't wait to see what that magical world has in store.

message 45: by Becky (new)

Becky I anxiously await the sequel! The book enthralled me in a rich story with remarkable characters and I don't want to wait to read what comes next. However, I guess I must resign myself to wait. Please keep us updated on the sequels progress, since I'm obviously not the only one desperate to know what comes next.

message 46: by Lois (new)

Lois Freeman Just finished it! Can't wait to read the next one! Can't, can't, can't... no pressure though....

message 47: by Alek (new)

Alek I enjoyed reading the book and would love to read the sequel. The Book One was published about 3.5 years ago and the last update on the sequel was posted almost a year ago. I understand very well the creative and slow process behind writing a good book. But, I have to say that I have given up on this one. If the sequel comes out soon fine, if it does not, fine too. Good luck to Emily.

message 48: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Take your time and write a great book!!!

message 49: by Trever (new)

Trever FYI to all - I just talked to ECB the other day and the book is currently working its way through publisher revisions and editing. No ETA on a publication date yet, but it's essentially in beta testing now.

THANK YOU I've been following for almost 2 years now, and I was wondering when there'd be another update
