An Update on the Sequel

When The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic first came out, the question I got most often from readers was whether a sequel would be forthcoming. By now, I think, word has gotten out that yes, there will be a sequel. (I hope you didn’t really think I was going to abandon Nora in—all right, no spoiler!—the place I left her at the end of the novel.) Now there is another question: When is the sequel coming out?

The answer to this question is not as easy. “Some time after I finish writing it” is about the best I can do right now. I’m three-quarters of the way through a first draft, and the writing is going well. Still, the story evolves as I go along. I’m still learning about my characters, as they move into different situations and into new relationships with each other, and some things that originally I thought I could cover in a page end up taking up a whole chapter. I like to believe that’s a good sign. If I’m interested in what’s happening, my bet is that readers will be, too. But the whole process takes time. Then there’s the editing and publishing process, which as you know has its own schedule, not always predictable.

Such a vague answer may be small comfort to those of you who just want to know What. Happens. Next. I’ve been there. I vividly remember the sense of frustration—oh let’s not mince words, of betrayal—when I got to the end of The Golden Compass and (spoiler!) realized that I was not about to find out what lay in the new world that Lyra’s father had just blasted a portal into. I had known, going in, that the book was the first novel of a series, but even so, I hankered for more resolution. Even Pullman’s perfect final sentence didn’t make up for the tidy ending I was missing: “So Lyra and her daemon turned away from the world they were born in, and looked toward the sun, and walked into the sky.”

And yet here I am, having written a novel that—while it doesn’t end with Nora dangling from her fingernails from a cliff, no levitation spell handy—does suggest that there needs to be more magic in her future. As it happens, the first version of The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic did tie everything up neatly with a regulation happy ending. That draft was also a thousand pages long. My agent had the brilliant suggestion of ending the novel at a scene that seemed like a good resting place, and saving the rest of the story for a sequel.

It took me about a day to wrap my head about this idea, and then I saw the best part of it: I wouldn’t have to say goodbye to Nora, Aruendiel, and the world of real magic. Because I hated to come to the end of the novel, too. And I knew that there was much, much more to tell, even beyond what I had originally envisioned.

So the end of the first draft has become the beginning of the second book. (And some things I’m saving for Book Three, too.) I’m having a lot of fun with the story, especially now, as I approach the climactic chapters. In fact, I’d love to tell you what’s happening now—but I’m going to stay mum, because that makes me write faster. I can’t promise daily or even monthly updates, but I’ll let you know, via Goodreads, Twitter, and Facebook, when the book reaches major milestones.

Huge thanks to everyone who has read my novel and let me know how you liked it. I’m hoping you’ll enjoy Book Two as much as I am now.

Witchy I rather read a book that has 700 pages and that I have to wait for 2 years before it is released. Then read a book with 60 pages that has sequales coming out every 3 months. Also I love books that does not go from action scene to action scene. I love some normal day to day things also. Just like youre book the pacing is very good. So take all your time. If it is as good as the first book or atleast 70% I will be in heaven.

message 2: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald At the beginning of the first book Nora had a problem with a mouse and thinks today I could rid of it right away meaning to be from the first few pages there would be a 2nd book. But when??? I am hoping the 2nd one is as good if now better than the first. Of course I am getting older....

message 3: by Mareth (new)

Mareth Squee! Happy to hear that the writing is going well and that you're enjoying the process. For me, this has been the most frustrating book ending since the second Lev Grossman Magicians book (NOOO!), or the ending of first of Hambly's Antryg and Joanna books (WHAAT!)... And yes, I, too remember the pain/anticipation of that Pullman ending. Thanks so much for thinking of us, and keeping us in the loop with Book 2's development.

message 4: by Pauline (new)

Pauline Glad to hear that you're giving the sequel as much time as it needs. I'd rather wait longer for a good sequel than get immediate non-gratification from a rushed and unsatisfying sequel. (As a writer whose Muse doesn't always come when called, I can also empathize with the need to take time to figure out where the characters are going.)

message 5: by Hélène (new)

Hélène Louise Lovely news! :)
Do take all your time, a story needs to simmer to let all its flagrance flavour the book... ^-^
I'll be there anytime the story is cooked, ready for my third read of book one before testing book two!

message 6: by Dee (new)

Dee Excellent news! Of course there would be a sequel, and so glad you are 3/4 of the way done. I love the world you created in the first book, so I am looking forward to the next couple of books. Totally get that you first have to write it, then editing comes along, and finally publishing. I am glad you are taking your time, and not being pushed to write something super quick. Can't wait for it! ☺

message 7: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald I agree with Diana and Helene. I just wish very hard that this book will come out sometime in the spring. But I know the creative process cannot be pushed or the book will feel forced. I just hope for a 2015 release. Realistically I am looking at Nov or December 2015. But I hope it is sooner.

message 8: by Marie (new)

Marie O'reilly I agree - do not rush. Much better to publish the story as it needs to be told, and should be told, but a year or so later than your fans want it. I always felt that was Rowling's biggest problem -she rushed. Your fans will wait. Though maybe not patiently.

message 9: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I'm so excited! I'll be happy to wait as long as it takes, and sustain myself by re-reading Book 1 in the mean time when I really miss Nora and Aruendiel.

Thank you for sharing your update! I'm positively giddy with the prospect of there maybe even being a THIRD book. :)

message 10: by Lynne (last edited Apr 19, 2015 11:39AM) (new)

Lynne Macdonald I hope for the next book in 2015.
I so enjoy Nora and Aruendiel relationship.
I like how Nora's little sister Romona can see Aruediel and speak to him. I am just thinking how wonderful it would be that Nora could bring her sister back with her. Just thinking....
I am thinking that her sister may have the same gift in magic as Nora.

message 11: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy I'll happily wait for the sequel. Too many authors rush out a subpar version, and this story deserves to 'simmer' for as long as it needs.

message 12: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pilgrim Patiently waiting to reconnect with Nora and Aurendiel as well as some of the other characters.

message 13: by Antonia (new)

Antonia Take your time, the sequel will be worth the wait. I am just happy the story will continue.

message 14: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I just finished (like minutes ago) and while I am incredibly eager to spend more time with Nora and Aurendiel, I can wait for a sequel that I am sure will be wonderful! This is a fantastic world that you have created and I love visiting there!

message 15: by Antigonie (new)

Antigonie I came across your book hidden on a barnes and noble shelf a few weeks ago. Sorry to say i think it was the only copy there! What a pity! This was one of the best contemporary books iv'e read in its genre! How subtly you developed Nora's realization of the Fatorian enchantment--imo simply superb! I fell inexorably in love with both Nora and Aruendiel--even Mrs. Toristel and Morinen were heart warming. Hooray! there is a sequel! Best of Luck in its creation--Cant wait--

message 16: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Eades I want you to know how much I enjoyed your worldbuilding. The race and gender dynamics especially, and the careful attention to details of the no industrialized world, like how much work is involved in putting up food for the winter, or bartering for a pair of boots. So careful and so thoughtful. I very much hope we'll see more of Higizjakinis' country and people.

message 17: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Has there been any word abut when the sequel will be out? Or is there only the sound of waiting... I sure do wish it was at least almost ready.

message 18: by Alison (new)

Alison Thank you for writing this book. I absolutely loved spending time in the world you created. I agree with Ellen that the details and your focus on practical realities made the world feel so wide and lived-in. I adore the gradual shifting in the relationship between Nora and Aruendiel as well as seeing them interact with the variety of engaging side characters. I completely related to Nora's struggle against Ilissa's allure and how she needed to understand herself better in order to resist it.

Please take the time you need to write the sequel. I had such a good time reading the first one that I want to show my appreciation by waiting patiently and trusting your writing process. Thanks for the update!

message 19: by Julie Ricks (new)

Julie Ricks I just gnawed my way through your wonderful novel in two days...and then was hoping the sequel was out. Blast. In the meantime, I think I'll read book I again, only slower. It really was marvelous. I loved all the snarky academic stuff, and the inter-and meta-textual stuff, and the poetry for the ice demon? Reminded me of Daffy Duck singing every song he knew to get the Tasmanian Devil back to the zoo--brilliant!! Keep writing! Your book was just what I needed to brighten up an otherwise stressful time. Thank you.

message 20: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Here we April 19, 2015. It has been about 2 years after the first book. I have read the first book again. There is something about it that makes me love it so. I am yearning for the next book to come out.
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? I so enjoyed Nora's story as well as Aruendiel story. I was glad to read that Aruendiel saw what happened to Nora when the soldier called her the Wizard's whore and magiced the soup all of him. Nora was unaware of this. I think the Farmer Dalmer is Micher Samle and was looking for Nora. But since he could time travel he knew her but let on he did not when she did not recognize him. It was not time yet. Yes I think Micher and Nora will cross paths as well as Ilissa and Raclin. I think Aruendiel will teach Nora to become a wizard as well as possibly marry her. Morinen will take place of Mrs. Toristel and one or 2 or her brothers will help also. Nora will have another adventure. I am hoping that Romona will visit Nora. I think Ramona has the same magic possibilities as Nora. I think Aruendiel suspects it. I wonder if a visit back into Nora's ancestry will be made to see the origins of the magic. Please let the next book come out soon. I really loved it and I want more since there will be at least 2 more books. Thank you!

message 21: by Landis (new)

Landis Thank you for writing such a wonderful novel.

message 22: by Rondalyn (new)

Rondalyn I am so glad theIr will be a sequel! I waited five years for written in my own hearts good, two years is nothing, thank you for not rushing!

message 23: by Lynne (last edited Jul 13, 2015 10:01AM) (new)

Lynne Macdonald I read her post on Twitter. From what I understand she is still writing the book. I had thought for some reason she was done and reviewing it. On Twitter she was thinking of killing of a male character. Oh well. If Emily is still writing then write on my sister... I am hoping Ramona comes with Nora when she returns to Aruendiel's time and place. I think Ramona has magical possibilities. I hope Aruendiel and Nora finally realize they love each other and make a powerful team. I will use my patience now I know Emily is still writing. I am thinking though that this story would make a wonderful Christmas present for me. Sighhhhhhhhhh. If the second book is anything like the first one- well WOW!!! The first one really knocked of my socks.

message 24: by NM (new)

NM I loved this story so much. Such a complex adventure. I totally understand why book 2 will take a while....... patience is not my best thing, so I will work on it and enjoy it all the more once it is released.... (hopefully on audio CD? hint hint!!!!). At any rate, great things are worth waiting for! :o)

message 25: by Leah (new)

Leah Can't wait for the sequel!

message 26: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia MacKenzie Can't wait! I just want to read about Nora and Aruendiel get together to do a little dance, make a little love, and, well, basically just get down tonight.

message 27: by Donna (new)

Donna I absolutely loved the first book and I'm so looking forward to the second one! That said, I'd rather an author take the time they need to make each following book in a series as amazing as the first book that made people fans. Just knowing there will be a 3rd book as well makes me very happy!

message 28: by Jessica (last edited Aug 18, 2015 02:39AM) (new)

Jessica Beeles Please finish the sequel soon. I read the last sentence on the page, turned to the next one and it was like the wind got knocked out of me...Rerouted to Amazon's "If you liked this..." page on my kindle. I just sat there dumbfounded for at least a good minute. Then proceeded to flip back and forth as if this would extend the story or bring about a secret epilogue or the 1st two chapters of the next book. I just got wrenched out of a brilliantly amazing story...it's gonna take time to recover.

message 29: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald I know like you I am so ready for the next book.
I want Nora to go back to Aruendiel and.... get this.. bring her sister Ramona with her. Yes I know it was said yunger kids do have the ability to see magical things but maybe - what if she is like Nora? Wow. Now that would really be a twist. But I am not holding my breathe. The story is about Nora and Aruendiel. Still waiting.... for the new book.

message 30: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald Ok I went on Twitter and FOUND THIS!!! Just passing it along- posted 8/15/15.
"Bittersweet to be closing in on the end of a draft. Taking some comfort in the fact that there will still be PLENTY of revision to do."- Emily Croy Barker.
I noticed she tweets frequently- but not too often on the book. I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe in the Spring 2016 this book may be ready- I am guessing on this.

message 31: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bliss-Herrington soon?

message 32: by Lois (new)

Lois Moore I just finished the book (was totally spellbound), and am eagerly awaiting the sequel! But I know that every step takes time; is there any news?

message 33: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Macdonald I am hoping this year. Emily Croy's books are very detailed and LONG. But that is what I love about them. I know this takes time. I am hoping for another home run.

message 34: by Cherri (new)

Cherri Is it possible to die from unfulfilled anticipation? Can't wait for the sequel, I was so sad when the book was done, so happy to realize that it was copyright 2013 so there might be a sequel, so hopeful to think it might be out soon. So many emotions in such a short time.

message 35: by Joan (new)

Joan It does seem like we might get another update now, nearly 11 months after the encouraging update above, from Jan 2015--pretty please?!

message 36: by Misticalphyl (new)

Misticalphyl Yes an update on the sequel please! It's 2018! Just a hint on a release date would be great. I'm retired and listening to books enables me to work around the house & 'read' a book at the same time. Listening to your book took me to another world while I painted my kitchen cabinets! I guess most books do that for me but yours was so much fun! Looking forward to the sequel!

message 37: by Mareth (new)

Mareth Yes! I would love an update as well - and hope that things are still progressing well - with the writing as well as the contracts and publisher side as well. Thinking Woman's Guide is one of the books I regularly hype and foist on unsuspecting acquaintances. I hope work on the sequel is going well, and in the meantime I might just need to do another re-read of the first one...

message 38: by Dewan (new)

Dewan Please please please!!

message 39: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia MacKenzie I too eagerly await any updates!
