A free book?! Surely you jest, Andrew!

Hello everyone,

Do you live in North America? And do you want a free book?

What!? C'mon, nothing is free! Andrew, are you toying with our book-loving emotions?

Nope. And no catch, I promise!

Recently I read Stealing Athena by Karen Essex, and then I had an interview with the lovely author herself. It's a ripping good yarn, this book, and here's your chance to win a free copy.

To win Stealing Athena, head over to our interview on the Vintage Blog page, at this address...

http://vintagebooks.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/candid-and-uncensored-with-andrew-davidson-and-karen-essex/

... and enter into the comment sections the following phrase...

"Andrew told me I could steal Athena."

That's all.

The first ten North Americans to do this will win a free copy. (Not trying to discriminate here, but we've got to keep down shipping costs somehow.)

Only the first ten (10) comment posters will win this fine novel, so don't hesitate. Do it right now. The contest closes on September 15th, but I have the feeling these books will be gone long before then....

Good luck,
Andrew

P.S. One book per person, of course!

All the best,

Cecilia Thanks, Andrew, but I think I just missed out on this one.

I'll pay more attention in the future...:>

Thanks again,

am a bookseller at BN. In this economy had a hard time selling the hard cover, but am able to sell it as trade paper. My customers are really enjoying it.

message 4: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Cool. Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the support....

message 5: by Cara (new)

Cara Hi Andrew! I never got my free book (Stealing Athena). I've sent my mailing address several times and no response... Don't know if you can help, but just thought I'd let you know.
Thanks.

message 6: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hi Cara,

Thanks for the note. I really have nothing to do with the mailing process, but I will get on this if you continue not to get the book. Let's give it another month, and if you still haven't gotten it let me know and I'll get on the PR person at the publishing company....

Best,
Andrew

Cara Thanks Andrew!

Scott Hi Andrew,
I'm making my way through "The Gargoyle" on audio. Love it so far, you have a very fresh voice and the descriptions are often chilling. Love the dark humor sprinkled about. Maybe that's what I like about it: it's unique enough so it can't be categorized.

message 9: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Thanks Scott. Nice of you to say, and I appreciate it.

message 10: by Iva (new)

Iva Pejkovic Hi, dear writer!

I just stopped by to let you know that 'Gargoyle' is now in press-shops all around my country, printed in soft cover, symbolic price (about 3 EUR). I think that's very good cause now everybody can enjoy in this brilliant story, and it shows how popular and important this book is. It was among bestselers in 2009. here. :))

message 11: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hi Iva ---

Ah, thanks for the update. So sweet of you to let me know. I'm so glad to hear it, too, because I absolutely loved Croatia. Such a beautiful, beautiful country. The five days I spent there only made me want to spend a much longer time...

Best,
Andrew

message 12: by Emily (new)

Emily Sleator Hello, Andrew.
I finished the "Gargoyle" about 3 months ago and read it two more times after. Your book helps me in ways that are hard to explain and its absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, i relate to the burned victim's guilt to much but the words that you used to describe his feelings about Marianne relate to my sitution so closely its scary. Reading the ending was possibly detrimental to my mental health but what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger right?:) Hopefully, this book can be made into a movie because I really want to play Marianne Engel. I know its foolish to feel so close to a fictional character but reading this book affects me in a way i'd like to thank you for. Thank you!<3

message 13: by Andrew (new)

Andrew And thank you for letting me know, Emily. I send my best wishes to you, and the thought that it's never foolish to feel close to fictional characters. I do it all the time.

Best,
Andrew

message 14: by Emily (new)

Emily Sleator How exactly did you come up with these characters? What influenced you to create them? Were they already living in you without you noticing?

message 15: by Andrew (new)

Andrew That requires a long answer, and I've talked about it online in many interviews. But characters are like people in the real world: you meet them in a variety of ways, in many different circumstances, and sometimes you like each other and start hanging out. And if they trust me, they let me write down what they do.

Best,
Andrew

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily Sleator hahah I see. That's interesting but what I have learned is that many of my characters live in me. And sometimes looking upon it its a rude realization but assists me with helping myself. You are very lucky to have met anybody of similarity to your characters.

message 17: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Murphy The question of where characters come from is so fun. Sometimes feel like the people I write are little traits in me, or people I know, and I take that trait and let it get bigger until it drives a whole character. So there's a hint of the original person there, but just a whiff. Lisa

message 18: by Kathysue (new)

Kathysue The Gargoyle is a much loved and highly recommended favorite in my bookstore. We all hope you are writing another book... soon... very soon, please!

message 19: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Thanks, Kathysue!

message 20: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Yes please Andrew! I read The Gargoyle a long time ago but my bookclub is reading it for September and I'm so excited to re-open our discussion thread....I'm sure you'll soon have a bunch of new fans!!

message 21: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Always happy to have new fans :-)

I am working on something new, but slowly. I just can't do these things quickly. No idea when it will be on the shelves but it is coming, I promise.

message 22: by Carla (new)

Carla Andrew I don't know how to explain your book. I was entranced by every page and feared to miss something if I got ahead of myself when I got lost in the stories of Marianne. I can only imagine the creation of this book, the time the research the dedication to the charachters and then to create a true love between 2 souls. CAPTIVATING...I continue to check to see if you have anything in the future. Look forward to see the next masterpiece...

message 23: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Thanks Carla,

The Gargoyle is my only book, so far. I'm working on something new, but no release date set. (It'll likely be years, still.) These things take time.

Thanks for the nice words,
Andrew

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda Andrew- I loved The Gargoyle. I read it very slowly and savored it. I usually plow through a good book, but this one made me slow down and really think. I may have to read it again (something I rarely do)
Thank you.

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Glad to hear it, Linda; I love it when a book requires a re-reading, too.

Best,
Andrew

message 26: by Anneliese (new)

Anneliese Lacourse Hello Andrew,

I actually grieved when i finished your book!! There havent been many that have absorbed me to that degree. Have you read Kate Mosse's Labyrinth? Id be surprised if you havent :-)

Id rather you took a lot less then years to complete your second one :-)

Anneliese

message 27: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I haven't read Labyrinth, Anneliese, but I'll look into it.

And I would prefer it took less time to write the second book, too, but it doesn't look like that will be the case. It's still years away.

Merry Christmas,
Andrew

message 28: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Andrew

Did your book, "The Gargoyle" ever become a movie? If not, will it?

I'm happy to hear you're working on a new book. I understand it may take several years to write it, but I'm willing to wait :)

Colleen

message 29: by Anneliese (last edited Jan 23, 2011 12:49PM) (new)

Anneliese Lacourse Yes, a Movie would be nice, as long as it didnt have changes in it like 'The Girl with the dragon Tattoo' had.
Brilliant trilogy, but if they mess with the characters like they did in the first film im not going to see the sequel.
Thats the sad problem with making movies from excellent books. Many of them loose the essence of the story.

message 30: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I read this book earlier this year and LOVED it. Karen Essex is actually one of my favorite authors.

message 31: by Christina (new)

Christina Let me just tell you Andrew that the Gargoyle was my book of 2011. Love it so much!I know a lot of people are asking you to get a movie deal. Personally I hope not. Not that you or the book don't deserve it, but hollyweird has no respect for good books. They make changes to stories and the way they are presented. They never do a good book justice.Love you and your work can't wait for your second book.

message 32: by Nicole (new)

Nicole The Gargoyle had me contemplating for days after I finished reading it. I fell in love with the story instantly and can't wait to read more of your works!

Linda (Miss Greedybooks) Andrew wrote: "Thanks Carla,

I am waiting! :)

message 34: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Andrew,

I bought The Gargoyle on Audiobook. It is mesmirizing to hear. The voice is soothing and brought the story to life. I listen to Gargoyle as I drove. I often sit in the car waiting for the chapter to finish. I am almost done with only a disk left. And here I am, writing after googling you. I read your interview while chucking as you described your idea very much like Marianne's creative process.
I know I am listening to it four years late apparently. I bought it at the local Library. I am however, very thirsty for your next creation which you felt may take only 5 years to complete. Thus not much longer and much anticipation for this fellow Canadian.

I wish you all the best!
Victoria

message 35: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hi Victoria:

Thanks for the nice words about the book; glad you liked it. And I am working on something new, but it's still years away... Taking longer than I thought it would, but only because it's pretty ambitious.

All the best,
Andrew

Linda (Miss Greedybooks) I LOVE "The Gargoyle"! I will read any book you write! Please... :)

message 37: by Barb (new)

Barb I know that this is probably way too late, but I absolutely LOVED the Gargoyle so will read whatever Andrew suggests. I was having so many difficulties with work and children that the Gargoyle took me out of myself and transported me to another place. It was a mini vacation from life and was greatly appreciated. Can't wait for his next book. In the mean time would love to read Karen's book.
