Here we are again! Since World Between ended far sooner than I thought it would, I can’t share some of the songs I was so excited to share. *sob* But you’ll get them next book!
As for this one, it’s a mix of new and old. Part of the fun of writing people my own age is that I get to relive my youth and throw in songs I might not otherwise put in a playlist.
Scroll down to the bottom for the Spotify link to the entire playlist.
“Girl Afraid” – The Smiths
This is more a general song with no specific chapter. But I think many of us can relate to the relationship angst, as some of my characters do.
“Head On” – The Jesus and Mary Chain (Chapter 12)
Yeah, so you’re gonna have to imagine this played the way it is in the book.
Also, as far as I’m concerned, there’s only ONE (rock) version of this song, and it’s this one. Sorry Pixies, yours was okay, but this is where it’s at.
“Flaws” – Vancouver Sleep Clinic (Chapter 15)
A song about the struggle of dealing with our emotions and burdens. About making mistakes. About trying to do it alone – and about how we shouldn’t.
“Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” – The Smiths (Chapter 15)
When you’re really, really sorry and hope for forgiveness. At least in this instance.
“Close to me” – The Cure (Chapter 26)
This song just called out to me for this chapter. And I’ve got another below. I couldn’t decide, so you get both!
“I Wanna Be Adored” – The Stone Roses (Chapter 26)
*sighs happily*
“Say Yes” – Elliott Smith (Chapter 27)
I love this song, and it’s PERFECT for this chapter.
“Until She Comes” – The Psychedelic Furs (Chapter 31 & maybe 32)
I think you’ll get why when you hear it. This is one of my favorite songs by TPF.
“Maps” – Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Chapter 34)
This song has been played a lot. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not good. And it’s one of the most perfect angst-ridden songs ever written about unrequited love.
“Sweet Disposition” – The Temper Trap (Chapter 41)
I fucking love this song. It can come on after I’ve heard it forty times, and I’ll think I don’t need to hear it, and then I’m belting out, “…stay thereeeeeeeeeeeee, ’cause I’ll be coming oveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerr…”
So many lines work for this scene. It’s youth, and passion, and just really freaking awesome.
I’m listening to it as I type this. Turn it up. Loud. You won’t be sorry.
“Idioteque” – Radiohead (Chapters 42-45)
Of course I didn’t forget Radiohead! I won’t say too much (spoilers!) but it fits these scenes.
“Iowa” – Exitmusic (Chapter 46)
It starts off slow, but then…oh, man. When I first heard this song, I think I listened to it ten times in a row. It’s about the death of relationships, and the sorrow we feel about it, but it’s also about how love doesn’t always completely die. At least that’s what I get from it.
“Perth” – Bon Iver (Chapter 47)
I couldn’t find a song I really wanted for this final chapter, though I had multiple contenders. Then I was listening to music one day, and “Perth” came on. I’ve heard it before, of course, but it clicked into place.
The drums are just…wow. And the line “Still alive, who you love.” *sobs*
It’s about loss, and somber like I wanted, yet I love how it has so much movement, almost like a march. Like moving forward, despite everything. And that’s why it’s here.
That’s all! Thanks for listening, and I’ll see you next book!
