Eva’s Byte #384 – Those No-More Stores

The stores we were sweet on during our childhood and adolescence have left their own indelible impressions behind.

Off on one of a writer’s many detours in the quest of information to authenticate a time period in storytelling, I came across the history of the mighty, no-more building which once housed the J.L. Hudson Department Store in downtown Detroit, Michigan.

…Which got me thinking about Woolworth’s, the no-more department store that once dotted the landscape of cities all over the United States.

During my adolescence, I was lucky enough to pass through its Westminster Street doors every Saturday. The store was a conduit to my mother’s hair salon located on Fulton Street. The savory smell of chicken soup emanating from behind the counter permeated the store. As we progressed to the opposite end, my sister and I would dawdle by the shelves displaying Rhode Island souvenirs of seashells and miniature lighthouses. We also made it a point to pay a visit to the canaries and parakeets before we exited the Fulton Street doors.

In the capacity of a writer, I finished wending my way through a backstory which takes place in 1957 along chapter 18 (1517 words) of my Contemporary work in progress. I’ve begun drafting chapter 19 (262 words thus far). By the way, there are no department stores to speak of in my small-town, seaside setting.

*May each of us indulge in nostalgia every now and then to enjoy basking in the way things were.

My sincere appreciation for reading this far.
