Ableism in Goodreads Giveaways
Okay, I'm going to go there. I'm going to use the term "ableism" even though to be quite honest I'm not even entirely certain what it means—I'm Gen-X and this term only began to snake into my consciousness within the past few years. But I'm fairly certain it means not taking into account the many people who may not have the physical abilities that the majority do.
For me, that's eyesight. Which sucks given I'm a writer, journalist, intrepid reader, and spend much of my life in front of a computer.
About five years ago, my never-great eyesight suddenly went blurry in one eye. I had developed a macular hole (not macular degeneration). It came out of nowhere and was simply bad luck. (It's not genetic.) I've had two operations on the eye, one to repair the hole, and thank goodness, it is repaired, but the vision in that eye is shot.
This means I can no longer read paper books. I have to read everything on my Kindle and enlarge the font to one of its highest settings.
So when I get notifications for Goodreads giveaways and usually ALL of the books are print books, it's a bummer! I can't read them!
Please, publishers and authors, think about us vision-impaired people and add some digital books to your giveaways. Which is a lot cheaper too!
Thanks!!
