Even if a story is not appealing or sounds fun, it still should be read. Even if it doesn’t become your favorite story, it still should be read. We learn far more from the things we don’t like than from what we do like. After all our emotions should be exclusively used for the purpose of enjoying life. Even if this exclusion is not always the case, we cannot always control our emotions and as they do interfere with all the departments of life, particularly with those things that we dislike, and life is full of little things we may dislike. Such as (bad manners, disrespect and entities, which expect others to think for them). Other things which can fall under the category of dislike are manipulation and those who try to get their way; regardless of the other party’s own interest. Those that assume that a sympathetic gesture from you; implies a certain kind of permission to enter all other department of your life.
Why should I read at all or a particular story be read?
It should be read because I refuse to spend $20.00 dollars on liquor, when a simple $0.99 cents will entertain me for an hour and maybe even leave behind a page-imprint on my soul . Without damaging my liver or becoming so drunk that I would commit the act of adultery or fornication under an excuse such as &$@” happens, or “this is how life is enjoyed.”
It should be read because I refuse to spend $10.00 (plus or minus) buying substances that will make me forget myself, my pain and make me relax, when I can probably find a book that contains some form of suffering or even deliverance and relate to it. Because by reading someone’s personal story, I can become empowered, motivated and strong; without harming my own body. I will read it because it’s ridiculous to do what others do just to be popular, when I can find a world of wisdom with just the cost of 1% of what typical, “status quo” social activities cost. By reading, I immerse in other worlds and learn to cultivate my imagination. I get to see the unseen and dream of other places I can see for no additional costs when you cannot afford traveling at this point in your life. Because within the words of a book, I find myself entering a different dimension, where I find peace, a place to discover and to wonder, praise intelligence, human achievement and find the most intricate ways to solve problems. I simply read because I can.
Recently, I saw the film “original sin” and found at least ten things I disliked. I personally didn’t like the film but don’t regret watching it, it pleases me to find art that challenges my views and reinforces my own values. If I had to rate it, I would not give it a single star, but rather 5, since it provoked in me emotions so intense as those I would of experience if I read a book by cyrano de bergerec or saw Les Misérables by Victor Hugo; but to the far far opposite side of admiration. I am glad my personal interest don’t interfere with those values opposite to mine and that still depend on the good-ratings of the public to succeed.
Things I disliked from the film: Original Sin:
When Luis Antonio Vargas used domestic violence, slapped his wife because he was in pain, since she had lied to him, whats more bizarre is the double standard or duality, first violence then ends up making love to her and stays with her. It is a very strange way to love a person, while not being able to control one’s negative emotions.
At least to me, the sex scene is repugnant.
When Julia Russell or Bonny Castle steals from Luis Antonio Vargas, her husband or just the very act of stealing is wrong.
When Julia Russell or Bonny Castle fake her accomplice was dead and she never told her husband, Luis Antonio Vargas that the gun barrel had not bullets.
Because she never told Luis the truth her lover Billy kept threatening her and sleeping with her even though she was married.
The knife cuts on Bonny’s body, it’s sickening!
When Luis got beat up at the casino.
When Julia didn’t stop Luis from drinking the poisoned coffee.
At the end this is the perfect example of a time we watch art, whether a film or read a book for entertainment purposes, but end up learning more about the things we dislike and learning explicitly what not to do.
In summary, I believe art is the process of taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary, the more benevolent the more extraordinary.
