Right now it's translating limited sized snippets. It also doesn't understand tone or any of the real nuances of a language like a human translator would to keep the work consistent. It is the written equivalent of text to speech. Try translating a document to Chinese and back. I have seen people talking about using ChatGPT to generate rough drafts from story outlines that are then heavily edited.
