Chapter one? Which chapter do you mean? What date? Who is the old man and who are the children? I cannot find the passage you refer to.
Susan - there are thirteen sections in the book, each one numbered and identified with a date. The number of chapters in a section varies widely.
Anyway, I think it was one of the commentaries done by Marie Laure's grandfather and recorded for broadcast. Although that record doesn't show up in later parts of the book. Maybe it was subsequently lost.
