But, you could have a Great Well in your temple! ^^
Personally I really like the take on religiosity. I have recommended them to several younger people who had questions about spirituality but for whom I would have found it intrusive and patronizing to recommend specific religious or philosophical texts. Makes a nice primer to help them do their own thinking. A bit like Chesterton in that regard although less allegoral.
As someone who teaches college students about world religions, I particularly appreciate the richness of this particular religous lifeworld. Beautifully composed!
I found the religion of the Five Gods to be as valid a metaphor for the unknowable divine as any "real" religion. I think it speaks to the essentials that any form of spirituality must, and I can fully understand the view of the commenter from NZ above. With so many religions in the world, it is clear that many people are just looking for some sort of handle to understand something huge. Chalion's is as good a handle as Joseph Smith's...
Also, for reasons my close friends will understand, I can relate to the Bastard a lot. Too many religions have no place for those who do not fit nice neat rules. At least Quintarian beliefs do.
I've never been at all religious, and I can't imagine I ever will be, but the Five Gods strike me as well-constructed and congenial fantasy. In their own world, they're reality; naturally people believe in them and behave accordingly. It all makes sense in that world, but of course I live in this world, which is different.
