Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Awareness
May is MCS month so I thought I would start a list for the best books to learn about and protect yourself from this modern illness which is caused by toxic chemical overload. It is also called Environmental Illness and the doctors who treat it are called EI doctors. There are over 50 in the US now and a big clinic near Dallas, Texas.

Thom, I often wish that. I was just looking at the Zen list and hadn't read one thing altho I have planned to do so. Learning about this can help sleep apnea and also diabetes! Be sure your sheets are 100% cotton washed in baking soda! Also wear all cotton clothing or other natural fibers! These things make a difference for our lungs, sinuses and liver.
Of course you know to eat organic even tho most of us can barely afford it.

Oh Alice, that sounds awful. -- I know a tiny bit about what you must be going through as, on the one hand, I have cousins who suffer from similar sypmtoms (asthma, hayfever and pretty much every allergy under the sun, rashes if they wear anything other than pure cotton or sleep in bed sheets not made from pure cotton, just as bad rashes after eating certain types of food, etc.), and on the other hand, my best friend is trained and licensed as a natural/alternative health practitioner, so of course I've developed a bit of an interest in this area as well.
I had no idea that lupus was connected with MCS, though. Bad as things still are now, just imagine what would have been possible if a treatment had been available to Flannery O'Connor which would, if not cured her, at least helped her stay alive beyond her 39th birthday!
Can you describe the treatment prescribed by your doctor? Maybe my friend can make sense of it ... (Not that this is any of my business in the first place, of course; I freely confess to blatant curiosity here -- and also to being a bit intrigued because, as you may recall from your stay in Germany, "VOLL" as a word actually just means "full" or "complete," which doesn't seem to make much sense to me, so I'm assuming it's an acronym for something else!)
a far better explanation can be googled:

Abstract
Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV) was used to monitor the effects of qigong practice on therapeutic balancing of subjects. In EAV the electrical conductance of the skin above individual acupuncture points is measured using low voltage and current. Diagnosis depends on measuring the relative electrical conductance and its time dependence. An important diagnostic criterion of degeneration of an organ is an indicator drop which occurs during the measurement when the conductance decreases from an apparent maximum value and then levels off. Two series of EAV measurements were made before and after healthy subjects practiced qigong. Measurements were made at 24 acupuncture points at the ends of the meridians of the fingers and toes of a subject and were made by the same operator and equipment. The subjects were asked to perform a qigong exercise of their choosing. In the first series, four subjects were examined by EAV before and after qigong exercise. Qigong exercise decreased the average EAV measured values of the four subjects in the range of -19 to -31%. Qigong eliminated indicator drops for three subjects and reduced the indicator drop by 80% for the fourth subject. In the second series, each of seven subjects was examined by EAV three times in a blind protocol so that the operator did not know whether a subject had practiced qigong before the second or third examination. Qigong exercise changed the average EAV measured values in the range of -17 to -35% for four subjects and 4 to 15% for three subjects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

It worked very well for me. One of the things I recovered from was a sensitivity to egg white which made me very happy. I have to carefully rotate now. I hope it works for her if she is able to find anyone who knows how to do it. I was probably treated for close to 100 things and it was the only success I have ever had with being desensitized.
Dr. Krohn required all her patients to read EI books. The first one I was required to read was Dr. Sherry Rogers Tired or Toxic? It was very hard for me but she insisted I read it. Much of it is chemistry. I read it as I wanted treatment.
I just noticed a book on aromatherapy on the list and there are NO SAFE fragrances. Incredibly enough all of them can be toxic to a sensitive person. I was even warned that lilacs are very dangerous. I had no idea. I am allergic to the terpene of many plants and cannot eat many veggies as I react to the terpene. A woman I knew in Finland told me that Finns cannot eat veggies and she sent me a link which showed genetically why they could not. It was so interesting.
Maybe I have some of those genes.

Oops -- I removed it. Just goes to show ...

Dr. Andrew Weil said there is no such thing as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and he is supposed to be "radical". I think he is stuck in the mire. Even the CDC recognized CFIDS and they are very backward and for years thought it was a big joke. I have to remember this. I wonder if he has recanted?
May is Awareness Month so please add a book if you can. thanks

Glad for you. I can't imagine what it must be like since I have to avoid so much. I am also allergic to cats. they are the most allergenic animal there is! My husband is addicted to cats meaning he has to have them! Oh, wash your cat and then rinse him in tea. This will remove 90% of his cat dander. There is a spray you can buy which denatures cat dander and it is basically tannic acid.

you can probably find more info about it online. I think it was the Allergy Foundation where I purchased the $30.00 bottle of spray to rid the home of cat dander. I often get info from them and free goodies too. The actual name might be Allergy and Asthma Research..something like that. they sent me a free CD holder.

The Sherry Rogers books though are worth 10000000 of them and just wonderful. My 2c. Best health wishes to all:)

Hi Jodi, I just found this note - sorry I didn't see it sooner. Now that I have librarian status I deleted a couple of books that have nothing to do with this. I will delete the Katrina Berne books too as I do agree with you as I don't recall her addressing chemical sensitivity. Back when I read her books I had only been told that I had CFS. A lawyer had to tell me that I was chemically injured as none of my doctors around that time were capable of it. I hope you are feeling better.
