When you first started out, did you know that you wanted to write crime fiction or did it just happen to go in that direction?

Ian Rankin I think I knew my first Rebus was a crime story - though one where the model was Jekyll and Hyde. I started to read crime fiction and liked the pace and sense of place. I also realised a cop would allow me to explore Society from top to bottom.

One of the reasons I like Crime/Mystery series is that I get comfortable with the characters, I never get enough of the characters I love - like Rebus. Have you considered a prequel, which worked great for the Morse TV character, less well for other stories?
