Goodreads asked Debra Webb:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Debra Webb My father's father abandoned him when he was two years old. Then, after several years of abuse from a stepfather, his mother died on Christmas Eve when he was fourteen. My father took care of himself from that day forward, working in the shipyards of Birmingham until he was seventeen and then joining the Army. Sixteen years after abandoning him, his father contacted him via a letter to the military. The two reunited. My grandfather never spoke of what happened to him during those sixteen years, but whatever happened, he was a changed man. A loving father and a wonderful grandfather. The day he died he told my father that he would never forgive himself for what he had done to him and his mother all those years ago. To this day I often wonder what provided the wakeup call that sent my grandfather in search of his abandoned son. Whatever it was, I am grateful for having known him and for the love he showered on my father to make up for lost time.
