Gillian asked Heather Demetrios:

What is your favorite "YA" book from the time before YA became an established genre? For instance, I loved Jane Eyre, Homecoming and Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt, Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.

Heather Demetrios Hey, you! Fun to see someone I know on here! Those are all sooooo good. I know it's not anywhere near YA, but I really loved Gone With The Wind. The characters are older, but because of the society they lived in, they had limited independence in the way that teens do now, at least at the beginning of the story. I also loved The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. I was OBSESSED with Romeo and Juliet, The Diary of Anne Frank, Little Women, and pretty much everything by L.M. Montgomery. And, of course, Jane Eyre was a favorite, too. I was really into WWII fiction - lots of memoirs and such about people who were teens during that time. I have to check out Cat's Eye!
