Mai-Anh asked Lois McMaster Bujold:

In "Komarr," Miles reflects that Nikki having had Vorzohn's Dystrophy will bar him from military service as a jump pilot even if he gets treated before he shows symptoms. The clinic said that with retrogenes, he would never develop symptoms, so is there a reason the treated disease would render him ineligible for joining the Service? Or is it ingrained Barryaran prejudice about mutations, just being slow to change?

Lois McMaster Bujold
Slow to change; standards for military pilots tend to be stricter; and employers generally want to duck any perceived risk of health-care costs.
