I just got the inspiration question, so I hope you don't mind me copying & pasting my answer:

I was inspired by a lot of things! Part of it was me wondering what was happening on Earth while Amy and Elder were in space. Part of it was my travel experiences--I have never forgotten my first trip to Malta and have long wanted to set a book there. And part of it was a life-long love of weird stories, like Total Recall and Blade Runner. It all mashed together to make this story!
