On a re-listen of the Vorkosigan audiobooks recently, I noticed a 1-line reference to the tunnels under Vorbarr Sultana that were used to such great effect in Captain Vorpatril's Alliance - which was written about 20 years later. This got me to wondering: how much research of your own work is (was) involved in preparing for a new entry in a series that has been written over such a length of time?
Lois McMaster Bujold
I reread my own work so many times in the course of writing it and prepping it for publication, it's pretty well burned into my brain. I can pop back and check anything I'm in doubt about. (This can ambush me when I am happily wrong in some memory, and don't think to cross-check.)
Very often, something that was a throw-away line in an earlier work gets exploited and expanded in a later work, giving a flattering illusion of long-laid planning.

Wot5G deals with the difference between a Great Soul and what is deemed a Great Person (power, wealth, military victories, etc.) Sometimes a god does favor a soldier. How do the other gods feel about & react to a god’s favorite going around harvesting before their time the souls they are trying to cultivate? Do they understand wars as other than an odd increase in souls? Can the gods even communicate with each other?
