Hannah asked Ruta Sepetys:

I'm reading Out of the Easy now, and I've already read Between Shades of Gray. I'm a huge fan of both! This question is about Between Shades of Gray: What really compelled you to write such a haunting and memorable piece of literature? Also, how much research did it take to make sure the book was historically accurate? Thanks!

Ruta Sepetys Hi Hannah-

Thank you for reading both of my books! Regarding your question, I was compelled to write "Between Shades of Gray" when I discovered that some of my extended family had been deported to Siberia. Stalin's terror affected so many, but there aren't many fictional stories about that piece of history.

I spent two years researching the book and interviewed many survivors. I absolutely love research. It's all so fascinating to me and I get so wrapped up in it. I have to force myself to stop researching and start writing! :-)

Thank you!
