I've been obsessed with The bear and the Nightingale-it's amazing- and The Girl in The Tower is my most anticipated release of the year. If I may ask, has this beautiful, vivid, magical writing always been with you? Sorry if this weird, I just admire your novel, characters, and travel experiences very much.(So much, in fact, that I've been trying without success to learn Russian)

I have always liked to write. I think that finding a voice and general, and finding a voice for the Winternight books in particular was definitely a process of evolution, partly conscious, partly just a side effect of trying different approaches and seeing what works. Magical or vivid writing is mostly the product of very hard work and a lot of rewriting. It doesn't just show up. I wish it did! Not a weird question at all :) good luck with the Russian!

Katherine Arden:
I found your debut novel two days after it's release and picked up your second novel before the book store associates were able to even place it on the shelves after taking it out of boxes. Your writing is beautiful. Thank you for bringing a world to life that I had no idea I needed to experience. I am not familiar with Russian fairy-tales and want to learn more. Where do you suggest that I start to learn?

Katherine Arden:
The Winternight trilogy books have the most beautiful covers. I especially love the Bear and the Nightingale cover book. It is so Russian, magical and mysterious. I know there is an artist who works on those covers but is it you who tell him/her what to draw or do you give him/her the freedom to do whatever he/she feels like making and you just validate the end results ?
