recently I started rereading The Paladin of Souls and it suddenly struck me that Paladin reminded me of The Canterbury Tales. Is my mind playing games or did you use the Tales as a starting point when you began writing this book?

The book read to Umegat in the very last of The Curse of Chalion and of course the pilgrimage party in the opening chapter of Paladin of Souls were as-it-were shout-outs to The Canterbury Tales, especially the Chalionese version of the Wife of Bath. After that, the tale was on its own.
So, both our minds were playing games.

Since the debut of the ebook have you "punched up" the "kindle sample" beginnings of your books, because they are now effectively part of the marketing? I think books used to be like movies, which could start slowly because people had already paid (sunk cost fallacy). They are now like TV shows, that have to grab and hold flighty viewers.

Do you still sign at Uncle Hugo's in Minneapolis on occasion? We are planning to drive from Long Island to Dallas this fall & fiancee has angling for a detour through Wisconsin for the cheese. I am counter-angling to drive just a bit further to Minneapolis because... science fiction bookstore. If you do still sign and I could schedule that just right... shazam!

Did Galen have Barrayaran-style prejudices against uterine replicators and homosexuality? Mark implies that he was exposed to slurs against both from Galen himself, and it seemed like Mark didn't just know about Barrayar's prejudices in an academic way, but really felt them. Was Galen putting on an act, or was he truly biased? If he was biased, was such bias common on Komarr?
