A Goodreads user asked Janet Edwards:

Just wondering if I missed something in "Earth Girl" series, even though I've read them multiple times, why does Nia Stone roll her eyes, look up and make aside comments, as if she is talking to someone else, when ever her husband, Mason, gets particularly flowery and verbose? Really looking forward to more tales in the Portal Universe.

Janet Edwards Ah, there are two things going on there. One is that Nia Stone occasionally finds the flowery prose her husband uses in public a bit irritating. Partly because he talks like a human being when they are in private.

The other is that when stressed Nia sometimes appears to talk to ceilings and walls. Mason Leveque and Riak Torrek know exactly why she does that. By the time of the events in Earth Flight, so does the General Marshal, because he would naturally check out every detail of someone given Nia's responsibilities. Jarra, however, has no clue why Nia talks to walls, so there's no explanation given in the trilogy.

There is an answer tucked away in one of the Earth 2788 short stories though. Kappa Sector 2788 which is written from Riak Torrek's viewpoint. I don't want to give spoilers here because there are likely to be further references to this in future stories, Please either message me here or use the contact form on my website if you'd like me to explain further.
