Jane Ward asked Ian Rankin:

Does Rebus realise how attactive he is to women? I read the novels at least partly because I find him so fascinating, a real challenge. Of course I realise he wouldnt turn up for dates and generally disappoint me! Is this the reason he fails in relationships ie because any commitment would cramp his style as a detective? Or could the women act as a sounding board or confidante for his inner thoughts?

Ian Rankin I doubt he realises so many readers find him attractive! He's brooding, of course, and gnarly and a rebel of sorts - attractive qualities to some. Probably a fairly hopeless boyfriend though - or high-maintenance at any rate. I'm pleased for him that in the last few books he's found someone to spend time with (Deborah Quant).
