I want a sequel to THe Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, will you be writing one? I discovered you through Shanghai Girls when I was in High School and when I was in university I came across The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.

Thank you so much for your very kind words about the new book. I’m so glad you liked it! I'm not thinking about a sequel, although a lot of people have asked about one. I like the open-ended feeling at the end of the book. I'm not going to write a sequel. My editor and I talked quite a bit about whether there should be an extra chapter. But what would be in it? In real life what would happen is that Haley and Li-yan would tell their life stories, but we already know what happened over the previous twenty years. I ended up not only not writing that chapter but cutting about ten pages from the last chapter. I think there are plenty of hints about what might or could happen. I hope people think that Haley and Sean will live happily ever after. (I cut his proposal and the plans they made for their future.) And I think there's a hint of what else could happen in the scene where Li-yan tells Ama that people know where the grove is and might be coming. Ama asks, "What are we going to do? Who's going to help us?" Well, that person is just about to walk up the hill.

Hi Lisa See!! My question has to do with a slightly older book :) I loved Shanghai Girls recently, more specifically, the dynamic between May and Pearl! My question is...how did you decide to have Z.G be the father of May's child? Was it to create tension between the sisters or was there another reason? Thank you and have a great day!! Alia🩵
