Ryan asked Lawrence Wright:

Is there any particular reason that you chose a novel as the form for this book rather than non-fiction for this material? Which would have been more scary?

Lawrence Wright There are a couple reasons for the novel. One is that it began a decade ago as a screenplay for Ridley Scott, which he never made. I don't blame him, I hadn't solved the story and I didn't understand the science at the time. But the story stayed in my mind. I wanted to try writing it as a novel because I liked the form and wanted to try it. I'd only written one novel previously ("God's Favorite"), and I thought I'd like to try it again.
