Lawrence Wright
I lived for a while in Saudi Arabia after 9/11, and that plays a big role in the book. I got to visit some of America's most important scientific/medical agencies, including Fort Derrick, MD, and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. I also got to spend some time on a submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia. It was actually a lot of fun doing the research.

How do you cope with coming across events in your research that are obviously unjust but which you can do nothing about?

"The Looming Tower" is one of my favorite books (and a pretty good Hulu series as well). I was astounded by the amount of research that must have gone into it. How long did that take? How does your level of research compare in your non-fiction and fiction works? I just moved to Houston to work at the Chronicle and found "God Save Texas" to be very enlightening. I'm becoming a fan.
