Goodreads asked R.K. Howard:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

R.K. Howard Set your expectations appropriately. Don't write to be a famous mainstream writer. Write because you first enjoy crafting stories and second because you love entertaining readers. Success is subjective. Don't measure your success by fame or fortune, measure it by kudos from readers. Nothing makes my day more than a positive review. There's a flip-side to that coin as well, because a bad review sends me into a tailspin of depressive funk that my wife refers to as my Eeyore mode. Know all of this going in. Pick yourself up and keep going. Remember, if just one reader is entertained by your words, then you are a success.
