Why did you decide to write about the women divers of Jeju Island? This is your first book set outside of China. I loved the book, but was somewhat surprised that you did it on a different country.

I learned about the haenyeo about ten years ago. I was inspired by their physical and psychological courage. I kept waiting for someone else to write about them. Or at least write the book that I envisioned in my head. I believe it was Maya Angelou who said, "If there's a book that you want to read and no one's written it, then you should write it." I'm totally paraphrasing, but the sentiment is correct.

You have taught me about China in its many periods while also touching my heart. I have cried with Lily (literally for an entire day) and I have loved with Peony. I know that I will be reading your novels over and over. And I am greatly looking forward to reading The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Will there ever be a book tour for this novel? If so, when and where? I would feel so honored to have a book signed by you.
