My grandfather was in the First World War during which he was gassed and his lungs were damaged. He wasn't medically fit to serve in the Second World War. Instead, he was issued with a powerful shortwave wireless set and instructed to listen out for spies operating around where he lived in East London. I never got the chance to ask him if he ever discovered anyone. I've often thought about the jeopardy he might face if he was discovered to be the spy, spying on the spies.
