Kellie O'Connor asked Alan Hlad:

I really loved your book A Light Beyond The Trenches!! I was delighted to read about the first guide dog school for battle blinded soldiers came to be!! It touched me personally because I am disabled and went to Canine Companions for Independence ( CCI) and went through training to receive two wonderful CCI dogs!! I would like to know what inspired you to write that book and The Book Spy? Thank you, Kellie O'Connor OH

Alan Hlad Thank you so much, Kellie! I'm thrilled to hear that you loved the book. Your CCI dogs sound incredible!
I'm passionate about animals, and I was inspired to write THE LIGHT BEYOND THE TRENCHES after reading an article about the first guide dog training school that was established in Oldenburg, Germany in 1916. And THE BOOK SPY was inspired by real-life librarians who were recruited to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the World War II predecessor to the CIA. These brave librarians were deployed to neutral European cities, where they acquired and microfilmed Axis publications for Allied intelligence services.
I'm honored that the story resonated with you. Many thanks for taking time to write!
