I wrote a partial story about a dog named Shelby back in junior high, but I did not actually start to write toward publication until the weekend my youngest son returned from a tour in Iraq. This was October 2006. As we traveled from NH to VT to see his brother, I sat in the back seat writing a story in a notebook.
