A Goodreads user asked Rick Riordan:

How far ahead/detailed are your outlines when you're writing? It's difficult for me to strike a balance between knowing what I want to write about and still leaving room for new ideas that strike me, so I'm curious how you deal with it.

Rick Riordan Every writer is different. I make pretty rough outlines, going chapter by chapter, so I know the main course of the story but I let the details and dialogue develop organically as I do the first draft. However you do it, the most important thing IMO is to get that first draft written. Don't stop. Don't second guess yourself. Let the writing be rough and terrible. Just get it down. Then you can revise to your heart's content on the second draft. Good luck!
