Yes indeed, I adore Damnation Alley, for all it's flaws and how dated it is and everything else you could argue against it. It gets five stars only because I can't give it ten on this platform. Also on the 'Brilliant bookshelf' was I Am Legend which I think is hugely under rated.

Karl Drinkwater Sorry about that, I have no idea why the message wouldn't work - I had ticked that only friends can message me so it should have been fine. I have now changed that setting. Maybe it is tied to how authors have author profiles and personal ones, and it's not clear which setting is for which! Now I look inept. :-)

For me, Damnation Alley did what I wanted: it entertained me with an escalating story, and it surprised me. I felt like I experienced a whole world. As you say, it may be flawed, but that doesn't stop it also being wonderful.
