How do you go about writing realistic worlds in the Australian Military, or do you steer clear of anything too much like a real situation?

I also interview for my books, and if I'm starting a new series I do a lot of ground work (from my laptop usually, but sometimes in person) to make sure the information I'm putting out is correct. New situations often come up, and that requires tweaking but every time we meet new people I often pick their brains and give full disclosure first.
