Have the works of Pearl S. Buck made any impression on you, positive or negative? I've wondered if your books may contain allusions to hers, or if there are common themes in these novels simply because of your similar cultural experiences. If you feel comfortable sharing any opinions I would be quite interested. Thanks!

Not really. The only book of hers that I've read is Tge Good Earth. That said there was one time when that book did inspire me. When I was working on Dreams of Joy, I wanted to find a place in the countryside for half the story. I was looking at the map of China and all the different provinces, and decided that the right place would be Anwei province, because that is where she set the good Earth. It is a province that has suffered from poverty, famine, drought, and floods. It seemed perfect for Dreams of Joy

Have you seen the documentary "Above the Drowning Sea" about the Jews who fled Vienna in 1939 for Shanghai? It's the story, told both through the eyes of some of the survivors and with film clips from those days. The Chinese Counsel issued 30,000+ exit visas so that Jews could leave Vienna. Never mind that they didn't have any place to go, this was the only way they could escape. It's a wonderful film. Julie Martin

Lisa that quote u wrote about sisters as u know also have a unique relationship. This is the person who knows u your entire life, who should love u and stand by u no matter what and yet it's your sister who knows exactly where to drive the knife to hurt you the most. I have a baby sister exactly like that. For over a year I have been trying to get her to love me as a sister and friend like we were last year. nothing?
