What are the factors of a good story or book? (Good as in mind consuming, tear jerking, good to the point that all that matters in the world to you is to FINISH READING. Like your books.)

Personally, for me, it all comes down to: "do I *care* about the characters?" If I do, I'll go along with pretty much any story. But if I don't care, it could be the coolest story idea in the world and I'll still get bored and put the book down without finishing.

In Keeper of the Lost Cities, was it hard to make Sophie understand that she's an elf? Because I love writing, and I'm writing a story similar to that at home for fun (Person finds out they have magical powers and goes to school for people who also do), and I'm having trouble making the person understand while still showing that this is obviously hard for them to believe. Have any tips?
