I have to say that I've only read "Devil in the White City" and I was captivated. I really appreciate the historical aspect that you choose to write about. Did you always aspire to be a writer or did you ever have aspirations to be a researcher? Which quality (the writing or the research) speaks to you more as you are writing? Thank you for your works!

I've always wanted to write. I wrote a novel when I was 13. A very BAD novel, I hasten to add. But, I also love the research. To me every day in an archive is like a detective story, with me hunting the perfect detail.

I see you referred to your writing as "so-called narrative history." I think there are literary fiction elements to your stories, as well. Do you think your writing bridges both genres? What are your thoughts on the whole genre labeling of books? And what exactly is narrative historical fiction as opposed to historical fiction?
