Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ben Spencer The Brick Mason's Sons is something of an homage to my childhood, although I hope it's clear that the characters in the novel aren't modeled on those closest to me. The setting, however, clearly draws from places where I've lived and worked. I have a deep affection for the land where I grew up, and I wanted to convey a sense of my parents' property in the novel. I also tried to describe what it was like working as a teenager at various construction sites. There are also many baseball and basketball-centered scenes in the book, which I drew from my own experiences playing the two sports.
