I think this is different for everyone who writes - for me it is being able to disappear into a world where I have total control (well to a point - characters tend to take off in different directions from what you intended after a while).
It is brilliant to see something that previously only existed inside your head being read and hopefully enjoyed by other people and I never get tired of people telling me what they liked (and didn't like) and what they thought of the storyline and characters.
