Rosemary asked Cornelia Funke:

Hi Corenlia. I was wondering what was the inspiration for writing The Thief Lord? It was one of my all-time favorites as a child. Thank you so much. - Rosemary Morton

Cornelia Funke There were several things that inspired Thief Lord:

First of course Venice. It is one of the most important heroes of the story.
I had the idea for the book in Venice: the idea of a boy who wants to be an adult - NOW! And who is so good at pretending he is a grown up that he is actually mistaken for one. I was a child who had Scipio's wish. I wanted to be an adult - to make my own decisions, get a dog, stay up all night, If I want to, move to an exciting and adventurous place.....there are so many stories about children, who like Peter Pan want to remain children. I wanted to write about children like me - the ones who want to grow up fast!:)
