There is no right way to become a writer. Everyone's path is different. The important thing is to set clear goals for yourself and figure out how you need to reach them. Are you the kind of person who needs to have a set amount of words each day so that you make yourself sit and write? Do you remember to feed your muse? Are you balancing your writing with the things that make you a well rounded human? Don't beat yourself up, but take care of yourself and give yourself what you need to get you to the keyboard.
