My most recent book is a biographical novel about the writer, Dorothy Richardson. I discovered her completely by accident, through a review Virginia Woolf wrote about one of Dorothy’s books. This was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with Dorothy. The more I learnt about her, the more I became convinced that her remarkable story needed to be unearthed and retold. Many years and a PhD thesis later, The Lodger was born.

Before I started Madwoman, I read a bit about Nellie Bly. Biographies written for Nellie Bly all say that her father died when she was only 6 year old. Your novel sets his death when Pink was 14 to suggest, I assume, that her father (a man) was the one who inspired her to be inquisitive and independent. Why was your choice to credit a man for her spark and desire to be heard?
